Khibiny Mountains (Kirovsk)
The Khibiny Mountains are the most dramatic mountain range on the Kola Peninsula. A day trip from Murmansk offers a completely different side of the Arctic — instead of the sea coast, you will discover majestic mountains, rocky passes, alpine meadows, and endless tundra. The drive from Murmansk to Kirovsk takes about three and a half hours. The landscape gradually transforms from urban views to tundra and then to mountains. The journey itself is part of the adventure, with plenty of scenic stops along the way. The program has three main parts. First, a jeep tour through the Khibiny — the route crosses mountain passes, rocky terrain, and valleys with stops at mountain lakes, viewpoints, and waterfalls. This allows you to reach remote areas without long hikes. Second, a visit to the Apatit Museum with its unique collection of Khibiny minerals and the history of geological discoveries on the Kola Peninsula. Third, a cable car ride up Mount Aikuaivenchorr for panoramic views of the entire Khibiny range and the town of Kirovsk. The Khibiny Mountains are beautiful year-round. Summer offers green slopes, hiking, and swimming in mountain lakes. Autumn brings golden tundra colors and berry picking. Winter features snow-covered peaks and ski trails. This trip is suitable for active travelers, families, and anyone wanting to see the Arctic from a different perspective.
