Trekking on Gorelay Hill
Gorelaya Mountain is one of the most popular hiking destinations near Murmansk. Hiking here requires no special training but offers experiences comparable to real mountain treks. Two routes are available. The short route leads to the weather station and takes one and a half to two hours. The trail goes through rocky tundra with gradual elevation gain. At the top, panoramic views open up over the hills, lakes, and surroundings of Murmansk. From this point, you can see the landscape transform from the city limits to almost Martian tundra scenery. The longer route leads to Fyodor's Lighthouse and takes about three hours. The trail passes through tundra, rocky sections, and viewpoints. The highlight is the lighthouse standing amid northern landscapes — especially photogenic with its contrast against the wild Arctic nature. Both routes are suitable for beginners. Along the way, you can observe how vegetation changes: from sparse shrubs at the foot to nearly complete barrenness at the peak, where only rocks, moss, and lichen remain. Hiking on Gorelaya is available in any season. Summer offers green flowering slopes, autumn brings golden tundra, and winter features snowy trails with panoramic views.
